Thrifty Thursday: Uncommon Objects

Uncommon Objects
address : 1512 S. Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78704
hours :  Sunday - Thursday: 11pm - 7pm | Friday - Saturday: 11pm - 8pm

Uncommon Objects is a South Congress institution.  It opened in 1991 as small antique collective and has grown into a true destination in Austin.  Whenever Andy and I would visit from DC, we'd always come to South Congress and we'd always visit Uncommon Objects.  This shop is wall to wall, ceiling to floor, cool stuff.  Take a peek into one my most favorite places to get completely lost.

Every nook and cranny is carefully designed and each stall is highly curated with time period, color and texture in mind.  You'll walk into one area, like this one, full of red and white with collections of frames and busts, then hop over to the next one that's showcasing all white with an abundance of textiles.  There's absolutely something for everyone here.

If your a type nerd like me, you'll be in letterpress heaven here, too.  There's tons of typography and individual letters that will have your mind racing with all the things you make from them.  With an inventory ranging from large pieces of furniture to the smallest of tchotchkes, keep an eye out for those little details.

Like the TARDIS, Uncommon Objects is deceptively large.  Near the back you'll find tons of old school equipment...lockers, filing cabinets, desks that belong in some forgotten chemistry lab.  Not the usual type of thing you'd find in a shop that's just down the street from a walk-up coffee place.

The mid-century nook!  There's always such amazing pieces in this little section of the store.  And the inventory is always rotating, so there's always a little something new to gawk at.

With an ever-rotating inventory and an impeccable eye for vintage, Uncommon Objects is must see if you're in Austin.  It's not cheap.  Being on the main drag of a tourist heavy area, the prices are definitely more than what you'd find outside of South Congress, but don't let that keep you from taking a peek.  I'm sure you'll find at least one little treat to bring home with you.
