New Buttons

Been working on some new designs and expanding into more screen printing for The Pink Samurai, but for now, more of my go-to buttons are getting listed. Christmas is just around the corner and these little guys always make great stocking stuffers...so I'm stocking up!

Need some new kicks

I think these Wonder Woman high tops will do. They are super limited and selling overseas. Which is a bummer. The site Schuh is carrying them, but for just over $106 ( acutally 64.99 in GBP) This is totally baffling to me since Wonder Woman is an America hero. Sure she's an Amazon and champion for all women, but still think we should get first dibs. And by "we" I mean me.

You're Welcome

I love Karate Kid so hard. I found this ad when I was going through some old comics to make buttons and I had to scan it. This is needs to preserved for our future generations. Also, like most cheesy couples, Dick and I have a song. Ours is the song "Glory of Love" from Karate Kid 2. We are such geeks! If you forget how awesome it is, here's New Found Glory's cover it:

Student Art Sale

I just got my check in the mail from the Student Art Sale that was held in May and it reminded me to write about it! It's an annual summer event for Salisbury University and I'm sad it was my last one. I made 4x what I did compared to the previous year, which is great for me and the school because 35% of all the proceeds went to scholarships for art students. Too bad I never got one!

Here's some pictures of what I threw together.

I came early and took and claimed the best table. It was right in the middle for all to see! This picture was actually taken during a lull and some buttons were already sold, that's why the board looks a little meager.

Some silkscreened shirts of the best painting teacher ever and the silly things he says. Definitely the biggest hit of the day!

I used some of the bowls that are listed in my googoomuck shop for display. So cute!

the paint chips and earrings commanded a lot of attention. I have an unhealthy relationship with bright colors.

TMNT Cereal. Holler.

HAHA! I was going through some old comics looking for good stuff for buttons and found this. What an awesome 90s throwback! Don't pretend like you never had any.

Judo Chop!

lol.  I found this a while back and have been waiting to post it.  I guess now is as good a time as any.  Check out that perfect posture whilst being thrown!

So the portfolio review went really well!  I got some great feedback and couple packets of Old Bay, so I guess the whole thing was big win.  It almost makes me want to go to the one that's being held in Frederick, MD this Saturday.  The 3 hour drive is holding me back, though.  I got some great contacts, which is wonderful since I'm coming up on my last semester in school.  Can't wait to get out!  Time to start figuring out my life ^_^

Fun with Packaging!

So I'm in a graphics class right now that focuses on the design of packaging.  We've been concentrating on branding and logos for one product with two different demographics.  After refining these ideas came the mock-ups for the actual package design for said product.  Being the opportunist that I am, I chose to do my own product.

My comic book buttons are my best selling product so I came up with a brand name and some packaging.  I'm testing it out now in my shop and each button order is going to be shipped in these:

I decided to call them RESCUED! since they were taken from old and forgotten comics.  I'm really happy with how it all turned out.  They were made from the covers of real comics, so all of the comic book is used and non goes to waste.  I'd love to know what others think about it!

Comic Book Advertising 101: Lesson 2

A crucial part to any advertisement is celebrity endorsements.  Just make sure that they stand the test of time.
I'm pretty sure if you send it in you'll still get that autograph.  I'd be careful about putting a return address tho...

Comic Book Advertising 101: Lesson 1

If you are a hardcore fan of comic book, a casual reader or an advertiser trying to sell to the afore mentioned demographics, this online course will be very beneficial to you.  Advertising in comic books is becoming much more prevalent.  I mean really...they are on almost every other page now. So in order to tap into your market and study the transformation in advertising we are going to focus on how the 90's handled it in this first lesson.

What you can take away from this example is how EXTREME they make it.  Comic book fans in the 90's only responded to the most extreme of advertising.  It's like they're comin' attcha!  Everyone looks a little maniacal  and I feel like Professor X is trying to fart.  So remember that.  Try to employ insanity and farts as much as possible if you're going for the 90's aesthetic.  Not really sure why a poster in the underwear package makes the briefs un-boring, but we're just gonna go with it.

And always be sure to label your advertisement as an "advertisement" because comic readers are so dumb they might actually believe this is part of the story they are reading.  Especially if the ad has nothing to do with the book in which it's published.

Next Class we'll travel back to the good ol' 60s and 70s for some REAL learning material.
