Daily Drawing: 271 | Meowling

[This is part of my 365 project where I draw my outfits every day!  Check out my first post of the year for details]
These two little monsters have been yelling at me all day long!  Sprinkles has been particularly needy, requiring skritches and lots of treats.  And fresh water.  For some reason, new water, in a bowl that's different from their regular bowl, is like ambrosia to the kitten gods.  Cats, am I right?

September in Review

Thrifty Thursdays
September was all about exploring the vintage shops on South 1st St. in Austin.  Flashback, Amelia's Retro-Vogue & Relics, Ragalicious and New BROhemia all had wonderfully different things to offer!

DIYs
I shared a couple of DIYs that were really fun to work on.  How to dip dye and sew two kinds of circle scarves.  And how to make custom shelving!  There's also a pic of Sprinkles and some amazingly nerdy collections in those posts, too ^_^

Exploring Austin
Andy and I peaking through all the vintage and handmade that Austin had to offer.  We visited the Austin Flea and met some awesome people (and I got TARDIS blue nail polish!).  We checked out the City-wide Garage Sale, to see what that was all about.  Turns it's awesome!  And we popped around North Loop and South 1st for a weekend of vintage sidewalk sales.

Vintage Ts
This t-shirt was calling my name when I found it at New BROhemia.  It says B & A Co.  I have no idea where it was originally from, but I can't pass up a good initial ^_^ Andy and I do make a pretty great team.

Favorite Daily Drawings
Andy got me a pair of Tumbleweeds cat-eye glasses and I've been wearing them everyday since the 9th.  Big hair and cat dresses are a way of life...clearly.  And this last one was actually from yesterday.  My new vintage dress from Ragalicious is a new favorite!

A/W Scarf Line!
My biggest and most fun announcement of the month, was debuting my new line of cowls!  Eep!  Neons and two-tones abound!  Apologies for the cheesy alliteration below...
Perfect Pinks!
Pretty Purples!
Terrific Teals!

It's been another fun and full month in Austin!  I know October will just as crazy ^_^  Wishing you the best in this new Fall season!!!

Daily Drawing 270: Scavenger Hunting

[This is part of my 365 project where I draw my outfits every day!  Check out my first post of the year for details]
We spent this rainy day hopping around town at different vintage shops and antique malls looking for nothing in particular (except that elusive coffee table we can never seem to find).  I finally wore the dress I picked up at Ragalicious when I went to take photos.  It fits so perfectly and the pattern is so sweet.  I love it ^_^

Andy and I absolutely love our lazy weekends.  I hope yours was relaxing, too!

Daily Drawing: 269 | Gamer Girl

[This is part of my 365 project where I draw my outfits every day!  Check out my first post of the year for details]
When I was younger, I saved up all my little monies and bought a Sega Game Gear.  It was my most favorite thing.  And since then, I've loved video games.  There was even a three year stint in a past life where I managed a video game store.  Andy has a similar life-long love of gaming and we were so stoked to find a bunch of independently owned game stores in Austin that carry vintage games for every console and handheld you can imagine.  We hit up a couple of our favorite spots today and I found one of my most favorite games...which is actually the first game I ever beat.  Jurassic Park for the Game Gear!  Now I just have to find a new Game Gear to play it on haha!

Fun Stuff • 9.28.13

Stuff to Read

Stuff to Make
  • Confetti walls are all over pinterest right now and this heart version is right up my alley.  Super cute!  I can even see cutting hearts out of fun fat washi tape for the same effect.
  • I love fatty crocheting!  These crocheted nesting bowls actually look sturdy enough for my mountains of pens and pencils. And you can recycle cheap tees from the thrift store for material!
  • Another sharpie on ceramics DIY.  But this one is super colorful!  And I love her commentary about seeing enough mustaches on mugs :P

Daily Drawing: 268 | Fancy Friday

[This is part of my 365 project where I draw my outfits every day!  Check out my first post of the year for details]
Back at my old job, I instituted Fancy Friday.  We worked in a pretty casual place, so it was a fun way to dress up ^_^  Some of the girls would dress up with me and I found a few photos of us this week and it made me so happy!  I miss those folks so much!

Exploring Austin - Texas Memorial Museum

When Andy and I first started dating, one of our favorite places to go together was the Smithsonian Natural History Museum.  We bonded over our love of dinosaurs when we first met and I brought my Parasaurolophus toy to work to put on my desk.  Thus, Dino Dates were born!

After moving to Austin, I was thrilled to find out we had our our natural history museum in the Texas Memorial Museum.  A lot of their fossils and mineral were found here in Texas.  True Texans ^_^  As you can imagine, it's no Smithsonian.  But that also means there's no crowds of tourists standing thisclose to you while you try peep some dinos.  A welcome difference, to say the least.  We even had the whole room to ourselves for a while!

Parasaurolophus!  If you know which one I'm talking about, we need to be friends forever.

There's so much more to this museum than just dinos and I know Andy and I will make this spot a staple in our local travels.  Has anyone else been?  I feel like I might have gone in grade school but can't remember. I can't wait to go back!

Fancy skirt day!  That's two weekdays in a row that I didn't wear my cutoffs.  Hooray!

Thrifty Thursday: New BROhemia

New BROhemia
address : 2209 S. 1st St., Austin, TX 78704
hours :  Sunday - Saturday: 12pm - 9pm

New BROhemia is a vintage shop that carries exclusively men's clothing, shoes and accessories.  I always get so excited to see men's vintage featured in shops because they're so under-represented, so finding a whole shop dedicated to our men is so fun!  The space organized by item type and size.  The selection is that perfect combination of wearable, basic shirts and pants along with the wacky plaid leisure suits and Hawaiian shirts.  And they have tons of boots.  Take a peek!

Just like any other retailer, the racks are well organized by item type.  But not just by button-ups and and pants.  They separate out the flannels, the Hawaiian shirts, the polos...everything is super easy to find.

So. Many. Boots.  I love how they displayed them against a royal blue wall.  It makes the yellows and reds really pop and makes for a pretty photo ^_^
If you need a patterned shirt, definitely come here!  I kind of love that brown shirt with the orange and yellow triangles.  That's the problem with taking tons of photos...I always find something I want later!
They've really got some of everything.  Leather jackets, vests and a great selection of belts.

I told you they had plaid pants!  My 17 year old quasi punk rock self wants to wear all of these with some docs and a band tee.
You know how you go into some thrift stores and vintage boutiques and find your dad's ridiculously wide and tacky printed ties?  Not here!  They're skinny with simple patterns and so perfect.
All the way in the back, there's an extra room that holds a little more of everything.  Ack!  I just noticed the Dwight Schrute mannequin in the very back!  Yesssssssss!
The back room also has a great selection of jean jackets.  But now I'm super distracted that they have a Dwight model and that makes me so happy ^_^

So dudes, if you love vintage, definitely stop in here.  And ladies, don't pass this shop up when you're looking for vintage.  I got this shirt here and a red bandana (you have to get them already broken in) when I stopped by.  Their t-shirt collection is super fun and they have all sizes.  I didn't even need to size down my shirt.  New BROhemia is definitely a must see.  And it's right next to Ragalicious and Amelia's, so you should probably just stop in all three when you visit ^_^

Daily Drawing: 266 | Forever Pink

[This is part of my 365 project where I draw my outfits every day!  Check out my first post of the year for details]
Just because I stayed around the house today, didn't mean I had to scrub around in my usual outfit.  Pink dresses are for happy days!

Austin City-wide Garage Sale

A few weekends ago, Andy and I decided to visit the Austin City-wide Garage Sale.  I'd come across it while doing all my vintage and thrift googling and I couldn't resist.  Happening once a month in Austin, the Garage Sale is a collection of large and small sellers from across the area. You'll find great collections of furniture, toys and vintage clothing -- there's a little bit of everything! Very much like the DC Big Flea, the event is in an large, indoor area with the displays ranging from small vignettes of antiques to folding tables with mountains of old cameras.  There's stuff to see in every direction!  I didn't have my real camera with me, but I couldn't resist taking a ton of photos to share.  Take a look!
So much stuff!  As always...it's best to just dive in at one side and make your way through.
I'm not sure how different the vendors are from show to show, but this show featured a vendor with tables and tables of linens, quilts, fabric, purses, you name it.   They all varied in price and condition, but if you dig, I'm sure you can find some treasures.
Some of the booths have especially great displays.  It can really help frame the objects in your mind and get you thinking about how they can fit in your life. For instance, seeing the lockers with that chair it make me think about how great would those lockers look in a sitting space. With a fresh coat of paint they would be a great conversation piece!  You could even store seasonal decorations in them!  Dangit.  Now I really want lockers.  I love a good display!
We were eyeballing this record player so hard.  It was one of those credenza players...super mid-century...super gorgeous.
And so much Star Wars!  Andy and I were like O_O when we found this booth.
Those are original figures!!!  The price tags made me want to pass out, but it was so cool to see them.  It was like a mini Star Wars museum in the middle of a flea market.
And so many cameras!  I wish my mom was there so she could've identified all of them.  There were some that I'd never seen before!
So fun!
Another shot to give you the scale.
This booth had some amazing luggage and clothing.  See that Creature from the Black Lagoon costume?  So good.

It cost $5 per person to get into the garage sale, but I think it's well worth it.  There's tons of vendors with a variety of goods and even if you don't find anything, I always think it's fun explore.  I think we'll definitely make this a regular stop.

Daily Drawing: 265 | Pigtails

[This is part of my 365 project where I draw my outfits every day!  Check out my first post of the year for details]
It was a pigtail kind of day in Helms Deep today.  I've been working, working, working on a new project and taking a little time to skritch lazy kittens.  I love productive days ^_^

Introducing - The Pink Samurai Autumn/Winter Collection

Yay!  I'm so excited to finally share my new collection of cowls with you!  I've been working on these for a while, and I'm so proud of them.  The inspiration for this year's scarves was color.  Last year was full of monotones and jewel tones, but this year is all about neons and brights.  Taking inspiration from previous color pallets and new obsessions, I settled on color stories that I could not be happier with.  The style is a variation on my Lila design, which is one that I wore more than any other last year.  I got really attached to that style, so I wanted to expand on it for this season.

I'll be featuring some different ways to style these cowls (other than just with a white-t...which is a totally fine to wear them!) in the coming weeks.  These are great statement pieces that really steal the show ^_^ How would you wear it?

Daily Drawing: 264 | The Tenth Doctor

[This is part of my 365 project where I draw my outfits every day!  Check out my first post of the year for details]
So, I powered through seasons 2-4 of Doctor Who on Netflix.  I finished watching all of the Tenth Doctor and I might have been bawling at my desk today.  When I watch a show or movie, I can get so invested in the characters, it's like my empathy is on overdrive and that happened so bad in Doctor Who!  It's mostly Rose's fault...girl can cry!  I'm tentatively going into this next season, trying to be open to a new interpretation of the Doctor, but wary of all the newness.  He even gets a new sonic screwdriver!  Andy actually got me one of my one ^_^

Has anyone else watched?  Sci-Fi is one of my favorite genres of...anything really.  I've been reading only that lately.  And after finishing up all of Star Trek, we're looking for more Sci-Fi to fill the void.  Anyway!  Who else has watched the new series?  I want to talk about itttt!

A Vintage Weekend

This weekend we tootled down from North Austin to visit a couple of vintage sale events going on in town.  On Saturday we checked out North Loop for their sidewalk sale / block party.  Room Service Vintage, Ermine Vintage and Hog Wild Vintage all had huge sales and lots of stuff outside to peek through.  All the other shops around were participating, too.  There was music playing, plenty of people perusing the shops and a light cool breeze blowing.  Pretty much the perfect day.

Room Service had a bunch of furniture outside.
And lots of tschotskes!

I do have a smidge of bad news that we found out while checking out the shops.  Turns out the owner of Hog Wild Vintage is retiring and the 21st was their last day in business.  Cue, devastation.  I was introduced to a couple of the vendors, though, who are working on getting their own shop up and running.  So I'll definitely keep you posted on any new developments.  Hog Wild will be missed, but I'm glad it was by the owner's choice, and I wish him well in this next chapter of his life!
On Sunday we took a trip over to South 1st St. to visit Amelia and check out her porch sale.  She brought a couple of other vendors to show in her wonderful back yard.  Our first stop, however, was Mellizoz Tacos!  I've been wanting to bring Andy here since I ate their ridiculous B.A.T. breakfast taco during a lunch break at Blogcademy.  It was such a gorgeous day to sit under the trees, with the cool breeze blowing and stuffing our faces with tacos :P
After gorging ourselves, we took the quiet little back streets over to Amelia's.  She had so much great stuff!  And I got to meet Rebekka from Bloomers & Frocks!  Seriously...you guys need to buy everything these ladies sell.  They've got Etsy shops, too, in case you're not in the Austin area. (Amelia's Etsy, Bloomers & Frocks' Etsy)
I'm kicking myself for not getting a few things while we were there.  There was this little 40's polka dot number I'm still thinking about.  So cute!
The moral of the story is: move to Austin and frequent vintage shops ^_^  You find cool stuff and make fun new friends.

Did anyone else have a fabulous weekend?  I want to know else was going on during the first of Fall!
